I haven’t been able to bring myself to blog in day’s. One could just say I went through a political depression. From time to time the enormity of what we’re up against becomes so clear that it’s breathtaking. It occurred to me why we are losing: we aren’t even playing the same game as our opponents. It’s like we sat down at our computers to play tic-tac-toe while our opponents sat down to play, well…civilization! Being a dissident blogger is like bringing a slingshot to a missile fight for chrissake! It’s like, “Take that you evil CEO, I’m going to blog your ass sucka!” Pathetic. Anyhoo, now that I’ve ruined your day, some news:

Since I’ve declared this “Political Prisoner Fun Week” over on Rejection08 I’ve decided to focus on my favorite political prisoner David Gilbert.

He’s been shunned and mostly forgotten by the Left but I just think he’s the bee’s knees! While many of us obviously want the immediate release of Mumia Abu-Jamal because he is more than likely innocent, the problem with Gilbert is that, well…he’s guilty as sin! After a life in the Civil Rights movement, SDS and then the Weather Underground he joined up with the Black Liberation Army. Here is a basic explanation of the BLA from Wikipedia:

The Black Liberation Army (BLA) was an underground, black nationalist-Marxist militant organization that operated in the United States from 1971 to 1981. Composed largely of former Black Panthers (BPP), the organization’s program was one of “armed struggle” and its stated goal was to “take up arms for the liberation and self-determination of black people in the United States.”^[1] To this end, members carried out a series of bombings, robberies (what participants termed “expropriations“) and prison breaks.

My wife and I just came home from the R.E.M./Modest Mouse concert tonight at Merriweather Post in Maryland. We went to see Modest Mouse, but to no avail! Due to extreme DC traffic we arrived at the show at the exact moment they were saying “thank you, good night.” Fuck. What happened was a giant semi ran out of gas in the middle of 295. Though I was annoyed by the back-up I must confess I had a little giggle. I was thinking about peak oil. My inner voice whispered, “Today it’s this freaking semi, tomorrow it’s the entire US military!” Mother Fuck Yes! Of course I think a lot of us have actually placed too much hope in peak oil. For example Y2K. For that little non-moment I wasn’t even “radicalized” yet, but I have to admit that when things didn’t go batshit I was disappointed! It looks like we might have to do this shit ourselves. Who’s ready?

The one “good” thing about the R.E.M. show was that the drinks were really strong and the presence of non-murdered trees allowed me to forget about the horror of daily life around the world and clearcuts…

Speaking of doing “this shit ourselves” and this event: we’re fucked otherwise! I guess sometimes I (we) live in something of a “radical” bubble online. Tonight I was with the “left.” It is not pretty. It was an ocean of Obama t-shirts and self righteous non-commitment. It was a post 90’s quasi-radical hippy, Douglas Coupland reading, ex-hacky sack playing, totally sold out, NGO “activist” freak show that I won’t shake off for some time. I guess what I’m saying here is, for us race, class, gender and eco warriors…we’re really on our own. Seriously.

We’re really going to have to do this shit on our own. Are you ready?

Los Angeles was like the test model for the globalization of spectacle capitalism. It’s a horrific dream world city that should never have existed in any honest evaluation. It was imposed on the natural world and culture. And it knows it. It must titillate to obscure the everyday violence of even it’s least violent moments. It is the culmination of the commodity cultures last breath, the full exposure of it’s contradictions. It shows an unsustainable economic model and unsustainable cultural model unified in their hopelessness. Twinkling lights will never substitute full stomachs, minds and hearts. Sometimes the humans (and non-humans) at the receiving end of this brutish freak show push back. It might look horrible. It’s nothing compared to daily life.
